The Beagle is one of the world's most popular family dogs, combining a gentle temperament with boundless curiosity and one of the most powerful noses in the canine kingdom.
History
Beagles trace their origins to England in the 1830s, developed as pack hounds for hunting hares. Their exceptional scent ability, compact size, and stamina made them ideal hunting companions. Today, Beagles are used by customs agencies worldwide to detect prohibited food items at airports.
Temperament
Beagles are happy, outgoing, and loving. They're excellent with children and get along well with other dogs — a legacy of their pack hunting heritage. However, they can be stubborn and single-minded when they catch an interesting scent.
They're vocal dogs. The classic Beagle "bay" can be heard from a distance, which neighbours may not appreciate. They also bark and howl, especially when bored or left alone.
Exercise Needs
Beagles need 40-60 minutes of exercise daily. They love walks (especially sniff-heavy ones), but recall can be challenging — once they catch a scent, everything else disappears. A securely fenced yard is essential.
Activities they love: Scent work, tracking, nose games, hiking.
Health
Beagles are generally healthy but prone to several conditions:
- Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD): Their long spine makes them susceptible to disc problems
- Epilepsy: More common in Beagles than many breeds
- Hypothyroidism: Leads to weight gain, coat changes, lethargy
- Cherry Eye: Prolapse of the third eyelid gland
- Obesity: Beagles LOVE food and will eat until they're sick if allowed. Weight management is the #1 health priority.
Grooming
Beagles have a short, dense double coat that sheds moderately year-round and heavily in spring. Weekly brushing keeps shedding manageable. Their floppy ears need regular cleaning to prevent infections.
Living With a Beagle

Training tip: Beagles are food-motivated, which helps with training. Keep sessions short and engaging. Accept that recall may never be 100% reliable around strong scents.
