History
Believed to originate from the Archangel Isles in northern Russia, these cats were brought to England and Northern Europe by sailors in the 1860s. Their dense double coat evolved to withstand harsh Russian winters.
Temperament
Russian Blues are gentle, quiet, and observant. They're loyal to their family but reserved with strangers — often hiding when visitors arrive. They're creatures of habit who thrive on routine and can become stressed by change.
They're intelligent and playful in bursts, but overall are calm, low-drama cats. Many Russian Blue owners describe them as the most dog-like cat they've owned, following their favourite person from room to room.
Exercise Needs
Moderate. They enjoy play sessions and are fond of fetch, but are equally happy with quiet companionship. Puzzle feeders appeal to their intelligence.
Health
Russian Blues are one of the healthiest purebred cat breeds:
- Obesity: Their biggest health risk. They love food and can be persistent about mealtimes.
- Bladder Stones: Some predisposition
- Stress-Related Conditions: Their sensitive nature means stress can manifest as urinary issues or over-grooming
They have few breed-specific genetic diseases, partly due to the breed's natural (not man-made) origins.
Grooming
Dense double coat is plush and low-shedding. Weekly brushing maintains it beautifully. Often recommended for mild allergy sufferers (they produce less Fel d 1 protein).
